Content Freshness and AI Search: When and How to Update

Why up-to-date content matters for AI answers, which date signals search and AI systems read, and a simple update routine that avoids fake freshness.

Content freshness is how current a page is, and how clearly that is signalled to readers and machines. For time-sensitive questions such as prices, rules, product comparisons and statistics, search and AI systems prefer sources they can see are up to date. For evergreen topics, accuracy matters more than the date.

Which date signals are read

  • Visible dates on the page, such as "Published" and "Updated".
  • Structured data: datePublished and dateModified in Article or BlogPosting schema.
  • Meta tags: article:published_time and article:modified_time.
  • Sitemap lastmod values, which Google uses when they are consistently accurate.
  • The content itself: references to recent events, current prices and the latest versions.

Google's guidance is to show a clear date and to make the structured data match it. The GEO score checker's Content Freshness checkpoint reads all of these and scores the newest valid date.

When to update a page

  1. Facts, prices, statistics or rules have changed.
  2. A new version, product or competitor has appeared.
  3. Readers ask questions the page does not answer.
  4. Rankings or AI citations drop for the page's main questions.

A simple update routine

  1. List your top 20 pages by traffic or business value.
  2. Review each one every 3 to 6 months, or monthly for fast-moving topics.
  3. Check every number, date, price and link; replace anything outdated.
  4. Add answers to new questions and remove obsolete sections.
  5. Update the visible date, dateModified and sitemap lastmod only when the content has meaningfully changed.
  6. Re-run a GEO score check to confirm nothing broke.

Avoid fake freshness

Changing a date without changing the content misleads readers and may lead search systems to distrust your date signals. Update the date when you make a real improvement, and say what changed when it matters to readers.

Frequently asked questions

Does updating the date improve rankings?

Not by itself. Real improvements to accuracy and coverage help; changing only the date does not and can reduce trust.

How often should I update content?

Review important pages every 3 to 6 months, and monthly for prices, regulations, software and news-driven topics.

Should every page show a date?

Articles, guides and anything time-sensitive should. Timeless pages such as a contact page do not need one.
