What is an llms.txt file?
llms.txt is a Markdown file at the root of a website (/llms.txt) that gives language models a short summary of the site and a curated list of its most useful pages. It was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024 and is a community proposal, not an official standard.
Does llms.txt control AI crawling?
No. robots.txt controls crawling. llms.txt is a reading guide for AI tools that choose to use it. Google has said it does not use llms.txt for Search.
Where do I upload llms.txt?
Upload it to your site root so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, saved as UTF-8 plain text. Then validate it with the llms.txt checker.
What should I include?
An H1 with your site name, a one or two sentence summary in a blockquote, and H2 sections listing your 10 to 50 most useful pages with a short description each.
